Pavol Demitra: Almost a Ranger
Friday July 16th 2010, 12:33 pm

On Thursday, news came down the wire that 35-year old NHL free agent center Pavol Demitra had signed with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv of the KHL.  Prior to the signing, Demitra had been rumored to be on the Rangers radar as a possible fit to play with his good friend and Blueshirts forward Marion Gaborik.  Demitra confirmed those rumors in an interview with Russian publication Sport-Express on Friday, explaining that a deal had been reached in principle, but delays on the part of the club ultimately lead him to sign in Russia.

Of the options in the NHL the most interesting was from the Rangers.  I was interested in playing on attack with my friend Marion Gaborik.  But the offer from New York constantly changed because they tried to get under the salary cap.  I was offered a very complex contract which included various bonuses. In principle, everything suited me, but the Rangers representatives delayed negotiations without explanation.  And we reached the agreement with Yaroslavl in a few minutes.  I took a week to think it over, and on  Thursday I signed the contract.

The 16-year NHL veteran will travel to Yaroslavl on Tuesday to familiarize himself with his new club before returning home to Slovakia to prepare for the upcoming season.  He’ll join Lokomotiv for the season on August 20th.

    Thanks, as always.

Not really sure how I felt either way, but it may be a blessing in disguise it didn’t work out.
