Russian sports site Championat, citing a “a source close to management” is reporting that unrestricted free agent Nikolai Zherdev could be days away from signing with Salavat Yulaev Ufa. The unnamed source puts the chances of Zherdev signing for the KHL powerhouse at “more than 90%”, but cautions that the 24-year old winger also has an offer on the table from none other than… the Columbus Blue Jackets. Zherdev spent four seasons with Columbus before being traded to the New York Rangers last summer.
A full translation of Championat’s story is below. Keep in mind that only a few days ago Zherdev told Sport Express that he hadn’t begun actively negotiating with any teams and that playing in the NHL was his priority.
The issue of the transition of Zherdev to Salavat is practically settled
As has become known to Championat.ru from a source close to the management of Salavat Yulaev, the issue of Ufa signing forward Nikolai Zherdev is practically settled.
The probability of it is estimated by the source at “more than 90 percent.”
However, the forward, who is well know to Vyacheslav Bykov, head coach of Salavat and team Russia at the last World Championship in Switzerland, has another offer from the NHL club Columbus, whose colors he defended for several years. Nevertheless, the issue of the continuation of Zherdev’s career in Russia “looks, in principal, to be settled,” says our source. And tentatively, Zherdev will sign the contract this Thursday, August 13th.
