New York Rangers 2009 seventh round draft pick Mikhail Pashnin is one of seven defenseman chosen by CSKA Moscow head coach and general manager Sergei Nemchinov to travel to Salzburg, Austria this week for the Red Bulls Salute 2009, a pre-season tournament that pits some of the top clubs in European hockey against one another. The six team tourney opens on Thursday and concludes with the crowning of the tournament’s champion on Sunday. Provided he’s in the lineup — he should be for at least a couple of the games — it will give Rangers fans their first opportunity to watch the team’s newest draft pick, as the games will be streamed live via the event’s web site.  (Pashnin wears the number 3, for those who do tune in.)

In addition to CSKA and host team EC Red Bulls Salzburg, tournament participants include Alder Mannheim of Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga, the Espoo Blues from Findland’s SM-Liga, HC Sparta Prague from the Czech Extraliga, and Swiss club ZSC Lions. CSKA will face the Lions on Friday (2:30pm EDT) and the host team on Saturday (2:30pm EDT) with the hopes of earning a berth in the championship game on Sunday (1:30pm EDT). For more information on the tournament, including the full schedule visit the Red Bulls Salute 2009 web site. For a video teaser of the event, see YouTube.
