Avangard’s Improbable Run Comes to an End
Monday March 16th 2009, 1:46 pm

Jaromir Jagr scored six minutes into the second period to tie the score at one, then set up Dmitry Ryabikin for the go-ahead goal four minutes later, but second-seeded AK Bars tied it with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, where Oleg Petrov deflected a shot from the point past goaltender Alexander Fomichev to give Kazan the 3-2 victory over Avangard Omsk in both the game and the quarterfinal series.

And with that Avangard’s troubled season came to a thudding end, while AK Bars moves on to the semifinals to face Dynamo Moscow starting on Thursday.  In the second semifinal match-up Lokomotiv Yaroslavl will host Metallurg Magnitogorsk, which won its series over Ray Emery’s Atlant Mytishchi with a 4-2 victory in Sunday’s game four.  That series will kick off on Friday.  I’ll have the full schedule and video links in the next day or two for those who still want to follow along.  I’ll also be keeping my eyes peeled for post-series comments from Jagr and any hints they might provide as to what his future may hold…

Scoring:
1-0 09:22 Alexander Stepanov (Ilya Nikulin)
1-1 26:07 Jaromir Jagr (Dmitry Pestunov, Jakub Klepis)
1-2 30:21 Dmitry Ryabikin (Jaromir Jagr, Dmitry Pestunov)
2-2 59:45 Ilya Nikulin (Tony Mortensson, Andrei Pervishin)
3-2 62:08 Oleg Petrov (Alexei Badyukov)

Thanks for the keeping us Jagr fans updated all season. Hopefully he’ll be back playing in the NHL next season – where he belongs!

Jagr – 7 seconds, 15 seconds… still I’m sure he’d rather dream of sports nightmares than a real life ones…
