The AHL released the Clear Day rosters for all 29 of its teams earlier today. Each Clear Day roster contains no more than 22 players, and only those players listed are eligible to play in the remainder of the season and playoffs, unless emergency conditions such as injury or call-up occur.
The Hartford Wolf Pack’s Clear Day roster includes two goalies, seven defensemen, thirteen forwards, and few surprises. One might consider Dane Byers, who’s missed most of the season after suffering an ACL tear in a collision with teammate Tommy Pyatt on Halloween night, a surprise addition. But Byers’ original recovery time had him scheduled to return sometime in mid-April, so his inclusion on the Clear Day roster is required in order for him to rejoin the line-up should the Pack get on a roll in the playoffs.
What is surprising is the absence of Justin Soryal, who’s missed 22 games since suffering a hand injury in a fight with Providence’s Jeff May on January 17th. Based on his first half, I probably would have included the 21-year old rookie over tough guy Brandon Sugden or even fellow freshman Devin DiDiomete. Unless Soryal’s suffered a setback that hasn’t been reported, expect him to serve as an injury replacement for Byers once he’s ready to go in a week or two. He’ll battle Tomas Zaborsky for that opportunity, however, as the 21-year old Slovak was also left off the 22-man roster. Both are likely to play a role at some point down the stretch and into the playoffs, as additional injuries and call-ups are almost certain to occur.
Junior and college players can be added to the roster at any time after their season is over.
