Grachev Second Fastest Among OHL All-Stars

The Ontario Hockey League held its All-Star Skills Competition last night in Windsor, Ontario, where the Rangers organization was represented by two prospects: forward Evgeny Grachev and defenseman Michael Del Zotto.

Grachev silenced critics who’ve questioned his skating and speed by placing second in the fastest skater competition, completing the circuit in just 14.183 seconds.  That was tops on the Eastern Conference team and ranked second overall only to potential 2010 first-overall NHL draft pick Taylor Hall’s 14.178.  That’s an impressive showing for a 6-3, 212-pound 18-year old, especially when you consider that Andrew Cogliano won same event at the recent NHL All-Star Skills Competition with a time of 14.31.

Del Zotto participated in the shooting accuracy event, hitting the mark with only 3 of his 8 shots.  Both players finished the evening with the penalty shot competition, but neither was able to solve the goalie they faced.  Del Zotto’s Western Conference team triumphed by a 9-6 margin in the skills competition and followed their success with a 8-5 win in the post-skills 3-on-3 game.

The annual All-Star game itself takes place tonight, starting at 7pm EST.  Check the OHL All-Star Classic web site for coverage details.
