Rangers Negotiating Extension with Zherdev
Tuesday January 13th 2009, 7:40 am

Larry Brooks reports in the Post this morning that the Rangers are in preliminary negotiations to extend the contract of Ukranian-born right winger Nikolai Zherdev. With words that are surely to be music to Rangers fans’ ears, Zherdev told Brooks: “This is where I want to be. I don’t want to play in Russia next year. I want to stay here and play in the NHL, in New York, with the Rangers. I’m very happy here. I like the team. I like the guys. I like living here. Everything is good.”

With over $39m in salary already committed towards the salary cap next season the Rangers will be hoping Zherdev likes it enough to offer a home-town discount. Otherwise, the $4m number Brooks throws out seems unlikely to get a long-term deal done for a player who’s leading a team with two $7m men in scoring.
