The Hartford Wolf Pack finished their four game pre-season schedule with a 3-0-1-0 record after following up Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Worcester Sharks with a 3-0 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sunday.
Brodie Dupont lead the Pack against the Worcester Sharks on Saturday night with a goal, assist and fight for the Gordie Howe hat trick. The second-year forward set up a goal by Michel Leveille to knot the game at one midway through the second period before giving the Pack their only lead of the game at 17:58 with an unassisted goal after stealing the puck deep in the Sharks’ zone. But Worcester tied the score early in the 3rd and the teams remained deadlocked until Patrick Traverse scored the game-winner at 2:20 of overtime. Goaltender Martin Houle followed up Friday’s 24-save shut out performance by stopping 34 of 37 shots.
Sunday afternoon the Wolf Pack picked up their second shut out of the pre-season over their in-state rivals from Bridgeport. Dale Weise tallied a goal and an assist while Matt Zaba made 21 saves on the Islander farmhands to earn the shut out. Greg Moore and Tom Pyatt talied the other two goals for the Pack. Bobby Sanguinetti, Hugh Jessiman, and Dupont all had assists in the game.
Now comes the hard part for the coaching staff — making the final cuts. Forty-two players remain in camp, including 4 goalies, 13 defensemen, and 25 forwards, with goaltender Miika Wiikman and defensemen Corey Potter and Brian Fahey set to join the team once they return from Prague. While there’s no roster limit at this point in the AHL season, a number of players will find themselves cut or re-assigned to the Charlotte Checkers of the ECHL over the next couple days so the team can begin preparing for Saturday’s season opener in earnest.
