Jagr: Everything Happened so Suddenly
Tuesday October 14th 2008, 8:59 pm

UPDATED 11:58: Sportbox.ru has posted a better and more complete translation of Jagr’s comments to Czech publication MF DNES about the death of Alexei Cherepanov than those originally translated from Sports.ru.

Hockey: Jagr in Shock
Czech forward of Avangard Jaromir Jagr is shaken by the death of his teammate Alexei Cherepanov. In a telephone conversation with a correspndent of the publication MF DNES the Nagno Olympic champion formed words with difficulty.

- How did the tragedy happen?

- Everything happened suddenly and very quickly. Lesha left the ice, sat on the bench. And died.

- It’s been written that the death of Cherepanov came after a collision with Jagr…

- Some Russian journalist made up that all up. Nothing like that happened. Apparently he just wanted draw readers and put the name Jagr in the headline. As you know, Lesha and I generally don’t play together. Both of us are right wings.

- After this, do you not lose interest in hockey?

- It’s very upsetting. This will forever stay in my memory.

- You were friends with Cherepanov?

- It is terribly painful for me to talk about it. It’s terrible. It’s a shock which can’t be described. I was very close to him.

Poor guy. I was never the biggest Jagr fan, but I can’t help but feel bad for the guy after having something like this happen to a teammate he was apparently mentoring. My heart goes out to all of “Lesha”’s teammates, coaches, and everyone who worked with him.
