KHL Season Kicks Off, Omsk Opens Today
Wednesday September 03rd 2008, 8:07 am

The KHL season got underway yesterday, and Chris Simon wasted little time in showing why he was signed by Chekov Vityaz. Simon and 22-year old Mikhail Fedoseyev of HK MVD christened the new league with it’s first fight, a bout won easily by Simon. Career minor-leaguer Darcy Verot of Vityaz also faced off against Alexei Krovopuskov in the game, a 5-4 shootout loss for Vityaz that included 167 minutes in penalties. Poor-quality videos of both fights are available below, compliments of YouTube.

Alexander Radulov made a successful debut, picking up an assist as defending champs Salavat Yulaev topped Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, the team they defeated in the finals last spring. Ray Emery’s KHL debut, meanwhile, was less successful, as he was the loser in Spartak Moscow’s 6-5 overtime victory over Atlant Mytishchi.

Jaromir Jagr and Alexei Cherepanov start their seasons for Omsk today, in a match against AK Bars Kazan, which will be attended by Rangers assistant coach Mike Pelino. You can watch the game live at Sportbox.ru starting at 11:30am EDT.

For those who haven’t noticed it yet, there’s a link over there on the left, under the heading “Links”, that has the 2008-2009 Avangard Omsk schedule. Along with the schedule and scores, it’ll also be updated with links to live games, video highlights and photo galleries when available.

thanks for the link to the live feed of the omsk game. jagr and cherry have not done much while morozov just scored two beauties to seal it, and zaripov scored on a wicked wrister earlier. pace has been fast, very good game, maybe too many penalties called though.

I’m not sure Cherepanov played a single shift in the 3rd period. Don’t know if he got hurt, or if they were just riding Jagr, but Jagr was out Cherepanov’s usual linemates from what I saw in between bites of lunch and client emails.

Looks like Omsk has already learned one thing from this partnership with the Rangers — how to over-depend on Jaromir Jagr. ;)

laurie – do you know where i could find english rosters for khl teams? who is 20 on omsk? played with jagr but name on the back didnt look like rosa. he took 3 brutal penalties in the 2nd that seemed to kill their momentum. i thought klepis looked pretty good out there.

Thanks for the links Laurie. I only caught the third (and only after Omsk tied it and then lost it) so nothing great today (especially without Cherry getting any ice time) but it was definitely nice to see hockey again.

Rob, the game is archived for on-demand viewing at the same link if you want to go back and catch what you missed. ;)

Why, I haven’t seen any. The KHL’s site has them, but I haven’t been able to get any of them to display correctly on my computer and I’m not sure where (or if) they’re archiving them, because I couldn’t find yesterday’s in my quick search just now.

ah thanks, i assumed klepis was 38 because i think he wore that number in washington. so rosa looked good and klepis took the three dumb penalties. that makes much more sense.

I just realized they also had it on sportbox, on the same screen as the video of the game. They provided it so infrequently last season that I just closed it without thinking.

The one on sportbox was a little ahead of the game. Only made a difference to me on goals since it was like GOALLLLLLLLLLLL! in Cyrillic and that was the only word that was really obvious
