Avangard Omsk improved its record to 3-1 in the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan Cup today with a 7-5 come-from-behind win over Metallurg Magnitigorsk. After falling behind 4-2 by the half way point of the game, Omsk roared back on goals by Igor Volkov and Jaromir Jagr, who tied the game with his first of two goals on the power play at 16:07 of the second period. His linemate Jakob Klepis made it 5-4 just under a minute and half into the third period and Alexei Cherepanov scored the eventual game winner on the power play just over thirty seconds later, chasing starting goalie Andrei Mezin from the net. Metallurg made things interesting at 13:36 of the third, scoring on a power play as Jagr sat in penalty box, bringing them within one at 6-5. But Jagr made up for it by putting home an empty net insurance goal to end the game, giving him his 6th point in 3 games, tying him for tops in the tournament with linemate Klepis and former Ranger prospect Jan Marek. Cherepanov’s four goals ties him for tops in the tournament with Marek. Former NHL goaltender John Graham picked up his second second win in as many starts. Provided hosts Salavat Yulaev win their game today against Traktor Chelyabinsk, Omsk will face off against them for the Cup tomorrow in the final game of the tournament.
