The new hockey season officially got underway for Alexei Cherepanov yesterday when Avangard gathered Omsk to start preparing for the KHL’s inaugural season. The Hawks will continue their preparations in Croatia, where they’ll arrive today for a 10 day camp, before returning to Omsk to continue training through August 4th. Then its off to Ufa where they will compete in a 5-day exhibition tournament that begins on August 5th.

NHL imports John Graham and Jaromir Jagr will join the team on the 26th of July, when the team returns to Omsk from Croatia.

Reiterating what his Russian agent said on Monday, Cherepanov confirmed to Sport-Express yet again that he will complete the remaining year on his contract with Omsk and play the 2008-2009 season in Russia:

“I still have a contract with the Siberian club for a year, and I have to complete it fairly. Therefore any choice of departure overseas this summer was excluded.”

Anyone else get the impression he’s reading from a script when he makes these statements? Anyway… in a fashion typical of the Russian press, despite the fact that Cherepanov confirmed he would complete his contract with Omsk long before Jagr signed there (and having included no quotes to suggest otherwise) Sport-Express chose to headline their three-sentence blurb “Cherepanov has Refused the NHL for a Year Because of Jagr”. Of course — I’m sure his contract status had nothing to do with it…

    Hi Laurie,

Great blog. I think you may be right about his comments being scripted. Which makes me wonder if he even utters any of this. Or if he’s aware that comments attributed to him are going to be appearing. (Well, maybe that’s a stretch.)

    Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks Paul. For what it’s worth, I have little doubt that Cherepanov is actually saying these things. In general, his words are easy for me to spot because I always have trouble translating them — I’m not sure if it’s a regional thing or what. But each time I’ve read him say that he’s staying in Omsk for another year, it seems he says it pretty much exactly the same way. So it sort of has a rehearsed feel to it.
